Grasmere Academy is a highly inclusive school that caters for children with a wide range of SEND needs. The school also has a specialist Speech, Language and Communication Unit as well as a high level of SEND throughout the mainstream school.

Our aim is to provide help and support to all pupils so that they can learn, flourish and achieve. 
 

The most common area of need in school and nationally is speech, language and communication and we will ensure that through a bespoke learning pathway, your child is supported to access a curriculum that is suited for them.

For some learners, despite planning, Quality First Teaching and levels of support made available in the classroom by teachers, progress within learning and social needs may remain slower than others with the gap between the child and their peers widening. It is our job to recognise this swiftly, act upon it and support your child to make progress.

What is SEN / SEND?

SEN stands for Special Educational Needs. It applies to all children and young people with special educational needs aged from 0-25 years.  The proportion of children with special educational needs continues to rise. The SEND Code of Practise defines SEN as “A child or young person has SEN if they have a learning difficulty or disability which

calls for special educational provision to be made for him or her.”  A pupil has a learning difficulty if they have a significantly different level of learning compared to their peers or a disability that stops them from accessing the curriculum
or provision for learning. SEND stands for Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.  

 

Children have a disability if they have a physical or mental impairment that has substantial and long-term adverse effect on their ability to carry out normal activities. Many children will be classed as having a disability (Equality Act 2010)

SEND can affect a child’s

 academic capabilities e.g. reading, writing and maths
 ability to understand  
 ability to concentrate
 behaviour or ability to socialise
 physical ability

However, not all children who have a disability will have SEN.   There is a broad spectrum of needs in SEND and there are many different learning difficulties and disabilities that fall under this umbrella. Any child with SEN will need
adjustments to help remove potential barriers to learning.
