The National Curriculum from 2014 states in regards to maths:
By the end of year 4, pupils should be able to recall multiplication and division facts for multiplication tables up to 12x12
This change means it is important for the children to learn their times tables facts and to be able to recall them quickly and accurately.
To support their learning of times tables we are pleased to inform you, we will be introducing a whole school Olympic Times Table Challenge which we hope will improve their rapid recall, knowledge and understanding of multiplication.
We will continue to work within school to help your child learn their times tables, but we also hope they will be encouraged to practise them at home.
We would like all children to succeed at their Times Table Challenge!
The links below provide interactive activities to help make learning tables fun.
Olympic Times Tables
To motivate the children to learn their multiplication tables an award system has been designed involving the race and award systems of the Olympics. The children need to learn their tables (multiplication and division facts and missing digit questions) to pass the following awards:
Finalist – 2, 5 and 10 times tables
Bronze – 2, 3,4,5 and 10 times tables
Silver – 3, 4, 6 and 11 times tables
Gold – 7, 8, 9 and 12 times tables
Championship Medal – all tables mixed
Olympic Medal – 100 mixed questions
World – 100 mixed questions involving decimals
To achieve the awards the children need to complete a 3 minute timed test and answer all of the questions correctly.
