Maths Curriculum

Maths Curriculum Vision:

Mathematics equips pupils with a uniquely powerful set of tools to understand and change the world.  These tools include logical reasoning, problem solving skills and the ability to think in abstract ways.

Mathematics is important in everyday life, as many forms of employment rely on its knowledge.   Science and technology, medicine and the economy, the environment and business all need key core maths skills in order to function, and thats to name just a few!  It is important that children are equipped with the skills necessary for the world of work.  Mathematics is a creative discipline that can stimulate moments of pleasure and wonder when a pupil solves a problem for the first time, discovers a more elegant solution to a problem, or suddenly sees hidden connections.

Our School AIMS for maths:

We are continually aiming to raise the standards of achievement of the pupils in Grasmere Academy.

The mathematics teaching at Grasmere Academy is geared towards mastery, enabling each pupil to develop within their capabilities; not only the mathematic skills and understanding required for later life but also an enthusiasm and fascination about maths itself.

We aim to increase pupil confidence, creativity and courage in maths so they are able to express themselves and their ideas using the language of mathematics with assurance.

Our Curriculum Overview

At Grasmere Academy we have designed a maths curriculum to support and challenge our children.  To create the curriculum we have used the White Rose Hub maths materials, which are supplemented with resources and ideas from the Ready to Progress and NECTM materials.

Please follow this link and select the correct year group for a curriculum coverage map: https://whiterosemaths.com/resources?year=year-1-new#update

In order to support the teaching of maths, the calculation policies are clear in how to teach different methods.. however we are always here to help!

KIRF's at Grasmere Academy

KIRF's stand for 'Key Instant Recall Facts' all our children will focus on basic skill to master for each half term.  The idea for this is that each KIRF builds upon each other, ensuring no gaps are missed, so fluency of number facts can be maintained.

Here is our mapping for KIRF's this year - this is a great way for you to help at home!

Times Tables at Grasmere Academy

All basic skills in Maths are important to master and its a constant focus of our work here.  Children learning their times tables is one of them!  To encourage the use of this in school we use Times Table Rockstars - please follow this link to access this at home, if you require a login, please ask at the school office: https://play.ttrockstars.com/

The impact of our Curriculum:

Our children love to talk about Maths!  They are confident and will love to show you how they have solved problems.  Our curriculum enables children to think deeply about their learning and reason and explain their understanding.  There is a real passion and love for maths and we build on this everyday with constant recall and retrial of basic skills.
